On August 7, 2008, Senator Barbara Boxer presented her Conservation Champion Award to the County of Alameda for its sustainability initiatives. The Senator presented the award during a tour of the County's U.S. Green Building Council LEED® Gold certified Juvenile Justice Center, which features an 850-kilowatt solar system, water and energy efficient fixtures, and water-wise landscaping. "It's quite an experience - a wonderful experience," Boxer said of the tour.
